Our Health Testing Protocol

HCM

HCM Screening

All breeding cats undergo annual echocardiograms by Dr. Sarah Mitchell, a board-certified feline cardiologist. HCM (Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy) is the most common heart disease in cats – we screen to keep it out of our lines.

DNA

Genetic Panel Testing

We run comprehensive genetic panels on all breeding cats, testing for PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease), PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy), and other inherited conditions. No guesswork, just science.

FeLV

FeLV/FIV Testing

Every adult cat in our cattery is tested for Feline Leukemia and FIV. Our cattery is closed – no new cats come in without full testing and quarantine. Your kitten comes from a disease-free environment.

Vet

Pre-Adoption Vet Check

Before going home, every kitten gets a thorough examination by our veterinarian. We check everything: heart, lungs, eyes, ears, teeth, coat, and overall development. No surprises.

Board-Certified Feline Cardiologist • Austin Veterinary Cardiology

We're fortunate to work with one of the best feline cardiologists in Texas. Dr. Mitchell screens all our breeding cats annually using state-of-the-art echocardiography. She's been our partner since we started SiberianSnow in 2018, and her expertise gives us (and you!) confidence in the health of our breeding program.

"The Thomases are among the most dedicated breeders I work with. They understand that proper heart screening isn't optional – it's essential for producing healthy kittens."

The Importance of Health Testing in Siberian Cat Breeding

Why Health Testing Matters

When you're searching for a Siberian kitten, health testing should be one of your top priorities. Reputable breeders invest significantly in screening their breeding cats for genetic conditions that can be passed to offspring. This testing isn't cheap – comprehensive cardiac screening by a board-certified cardiologist, genetic panels, and regular veterinary examinations add up quickly. But this investment protects both the kittens and the families who adopt them.

At SiberianSnow Cattery, we work with Dr. Sarah Mitchell, a board-certified feline cardiologist, for all our cardiac screenings. HCM (hypertrophic cardiomyopathy) is a concern in many cat breeds, including Siberians, and echocardiogram screening is the gold standard for detection. We also test for PKD (polycystic kidney disease) and other genetic conditions that can affect the breed.

Questions to Ask Any Breeder

If you're considering a Siberian kitten from any breeder, ask about their health testing protocols. A reputable breeder should be able to provide documentation of cardiac screening, genetic testing results, and veterinary health certificates. They should also offer a written health guarantee that clearly outlines what's covered and for how long.

Be wary of breeders who can't or won't provide this documentation, or who offer kittens at significantly lower prices than the market average. The cost savings often come at the expense of proper health testing, quality nutrition, and veterinary care – expenses that may ultimately fall on you when health problems emerge.
